Requirements
To be employed as a driver by SLH you must meet the following requirements:
- Must hold a valid license for the class in which you are hired.(e.g. AZ, DZ, CLASS 1 etc.).
- Clean abstract with no record of previous major convictions, (e.g. careless or impaired driving etc.) Your abstract must be provided at the time of your interview and not be more than 45 days old
- Must be willing and physically capable of performing various duties including city driving, highway driving, shunting, load and go (lifting required) and other duties as required
- Must successfully complete a full road test including a complete circle check
- Must have a neat appearance, have and wear steel toe safety shoes
- Must complete a written test
- The SLH Driver Handbook and Health and Safety Policy must be reviewed and understood prior to assignment and documentation of same filed. Must be able to qualify under the ICC requirements
- Must have a "negative" pre-employment drug test result
- Must be able to perform all duties associated with driving a commercial vehicle

Promotion from Within
Many of our employees currently working as drivers, dispatchers, supervisors etc. began their careers as shippers or receivers. If you are flexible and willing to move about within Canada, your opportunities for promotion will be even better. However, employees who are less mobile can still get ahead as promotion criteria is based upon individual qualifications, ability, past performance, and job availability.

Extra Curricular Activities
Depending on your location and shift, there can be many opportunities for personal growth and just plain fun through teams and groups organized by your fellow employees. Activities range widely, from rummage sales, hockey, softball, dances and social gatherings sponsored by our various terminal social clubs. Drivers can participate in rodeos leading to competition at the Provincial and National level.
Quality Program
SLH has an active and ongoing Quality program. Submit suggestions or error cause removal forms that improve processes and receive recognition including a cash award.
